Let's talk about Fitness

Commonly referred to as being ‘fit,’ fitness is a state of physical health and well-being. Being fit allows you to execute physically demanding tasks, like playing sports. There are five metrics used to measure your physical fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Maintaining physical fitness makes your body stronger and more resistant to dangerous conditions like heart disease and certain cancers. To stay fit, eat a nutritious diet and exercise regularly. We offer Zumba and HIIT classes to increase your level of physical fitness in a fun, interactive way.

Learn about Zumba

Currently, one of the most popular group fitness classes in clubs is Zumba®. Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance workout first developed in Columbia in the mid- '90s by celebrity fitness trainer Alberto “Beto” Perez. Zumba was actually developed by “accident,” when Beto forgot to bring his traditional aerobics music to class one day. The only music he had was a few Latin music tapes in his car. In his class, he let the music motivate him, just as if he were in a club, and began dancing to Salsa, Rumba, and Merengue. His participants loved it and Zumba was born. The protective properties of vigorous physical fitness levels on health manifest independently of age, sex, weight, smoking, alcohol consumption, and other clinical factors. Zumba fitness is an effective type of physical activity able to improve cardiovascular endurance.

    Jessica Kerkhoff, CPT

    Group Fitness/Zumba Instructor

Jessica discovered her passion for teaching Zumba in 2012, and she’s been teaching various group fitness formats ever since. Encouraged by her best friend to do and be more, she became both a certified Group Fitness Instructor and Certified Personal Trainer in 2018 with the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Jessica’s passion lies in seeing the joy on participant’s faces as they start to get comfortable with the dance moves and really let loose. Her favorite format to teach is Aqua Zumba, followed closely by Zumba and Zumba Gold. She always says there are three rules in her class: 1.) Change any moves you don’t like or that don’t feel good, 2.) Smile and have fun, and 3.) Well, #3 must not be that important because she can never remember it!
Jessica is married to an elementary school teacher and has a toddler—who is the light of her life—and two cats. In her spare time, she volunteers with animal rescue organizations in the Muncie area.

Learn about Crossfit

CrossFit is a form of high-intensity strength and conditioning workout. This functional training consists of actions that you perform in your everyday life, including squatting, pulling, pushing, etc. Variations of these are incorporated into workouts and combined with weightlifting for predetermined amounts of time to help build muscles. The effectiveness of CrossFit workouts comes from their elements of load, distance, and speed, all of which help participants develop higher levels of power.
